A half dozen Houstonians involved with the Houston Sin Fronteras Defense Committee were in attendence at the Friday July 20th protest of around 50 people from across Texas that took place in Austin against a Corrections Corporation of America's office nestled in a strip mall nestled at 8015 Shoal Creek. We responded to this call posted on Austin Indymedia: "Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) is the world's largest and most notorious private prison corporation, operating more than a dozen prisons and immigrant detention centers in Texas alone. Demonstrators will protest CCA's profiting from immigrant detention expansion around Texas, including the T. Don Hutto detention center in Taylor which holds migrant families and asylum seekers, about half of whom are children." Many of the protestors present were very aware of the things taking place at Hutto, but were unaware of the work Houston Sin Fronteras has been doing to challenge the Houston Processing Center in this neck of the woods. It was a good chance for us to tlk to folks and distribute liturature about our struggle, and support the statewide movement against CCA and private prisons. The response from traffic was mostly confusion, it was hard to see what exactly we were protesting. a number of cars stopped and asked us what we were doing, most of them seemed to approve once it was explained. I dont recall seeing a motorist who expressed displeasure. The crowd was fairly diverse in terms of age, and there were folks from anglo, chican@ and mexican@ communities. A couple of folks came up from San Antonio and were preparing for the next demonstration outside of the Hutto detention center in Taylor Texas. Towards the end of the demonstration, Austin Police showed up, and activists decided to deliver a petition to the office worker in the CCA storefront. following some negotiation they were able to do this and we all departed.
