May Day in the Bay to Be Part of May 1st General Strike
Immigrant rights and Latino organizations all over the US are calling for a general strike on May 1st, 2006-- MayDay, or International Workers Day. The March 25th Coalition against HR 4437 in Los Angeles has called for nationwide coordination, around the points "No Work, No School, No Sales, and No Buying," and also for rallies around symbols of economic trade. The coalition believes that "with numbers we
have power, the power currently necessary to keep the
pressure on the White House to propose provisions that are
just and fair for all immigrants."
The convergences in San Francisco will be at
8:30am at Montgomery & Market (Montgomery BART; 11:00am at the Embarcadero (Embarcadero BART); 3:00pm at SF Civic Center (Civic Center BART); and 5:00pm at the Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate. Organizers are encouraging people to wear white and bring energy and creativity, as well as pots and spoons to bang together in a cacerolazo.
Demands of the SF day of action and resistance will include: Full, unconditional and immediate "amnesty" for all immigrants; Free movement for all people; Freedom for all ICE detainees and the abolition of detention centers; De-militarization of the US-Mexico border; and The repeal of NAFTA and all neoliberal trade agreements which create economic conditions leading to the displacement of people. An open consulta (planning meeting) will be held on Sunday, April 23rd at 6:00pm at a location to be announced.
A Berkeley May 1st Mobilization Committee held an April 19th meeting to discuss plans for May Day. A protest has been called for 4:00pm on May 1st at MacArthur BART in Oakland. There will also be "Paro Nacional" events in Fresno. Additional actions around the state will likely be announced in coming days.
Some actions around the US: The Troops Out Now Coalition is calling for a major protest in New York City on May 1st. There will also be events in cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego. Read about more actions on US Indymedia's Migrant Rights Page
