Reports on students and workers resistance in Slovenia

Autonomous scene

It has been at least a good year since the activist “autonomous scene” in Slovenia has been united in the important struggle on the local level. Last year, it was the squatting and the formation of the temporary autonomous zone ROG (the former bicycle factory) that produced immense energy and desire for the transformation of vacant space into a lively community of different social relations. Even though later the community ROG faced many difficulties, it still remains one of the most important alternative and public spaces. One of the groups created a space and a group Social Centre ROG that works on alternative education (Nomad University: films, discussions…) and on immigrations issues (specifically connected to the Erased). Apart from these political realities, the autonomous scene in Slovenia has been in demise since the end of ANTINATO and antiwar movement in 2003/04.

After three months of demonstrations outside the Outback Steakhouse in North Haven, Connecticut, Lawyers from the company's Tampa, Florida headquarters met with the workers who were fired after issuing complaints to regional management about a kitchen manager who they said sexually harrassed them.

Washington - -- People clamoring for a crackdown on illegal immigration got their wish with the Bush administration's announcement Friday of sweeping new enforcement measures that will force employers to fire the millions of illegal workers they now employ.

Identification cards would be made available to all New York City residents — including tens of thousands of illegal immigrants — under a proposal by a City Council member from Queens who was inspired by a pioneering program that begins in New Haven today.

“I would hope that the federal government would not retaliate against the city of New York if we provided for a municipal identification card,” the council member, Hiram Monserrate, said yesterday, referring to a federal immigration raid in New Haven last month two days after that city approved the issuance of municipal cards.

This article is kind of crappy but it is the least obnoxious one I have found.

Conn. city offers illegal immigrants IDs

Dozens of people lined up at City Hall on Tuesday for municipal identification cards, the first city-issued ID cards specifically designed to bring illegal immigrants out of the shadows and give them access to community services.

The cards, available to New Haven's entire population, are meant to help anyone without a state- or federal-issued ID open a bank accounts and use other services that would otherwise be inaccessible. Advocates argue that if immigrants can open bank accounts, they will be less likely to carry large amounts of cash, a practice that makes them easy targets for robbers.

The San Bernardino Diocese has asked parishes in the two-county area to provide sanctuary on church grounds to immigrants who face deportation.

No Catholic churches in either of the two Inland counties have yet committed, but local anti-illegal immigration groups vow to protest other Southern California sanctuary churches, beginning Saturday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach.

LA Indymedia - More than three hundred Crenshaw District residents joined two hundred migrant rights' supporters and linked arms to keep the minutemen out of Leimert Park, the heart of Black Los Angeles.

Anti-minutemen protestors, called by the Mayday Defense Committee and Unión del Barrio, linked arms across the 43rd Place entrance to Leimert Park three lines deep to defend the park against the minutemen. Across the street, Choose Black America, a front group for the anti-immigrant march sponsors, Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), and Save Our State, a minuteman spin-off, fretted and stewed.

The LAPD, obviously sensing the determination of the people and reeling from the public outcry against their violence in MacArthur Park last month, kept the groups apart, eventually moving cruisers in front of the entrance to prevent a minuteman incursion, and rescinded the minuteman permit to enter the park.

The Black Bloc is very much alive in Europe. Thanks to the rather successful abilities of these anti capitalists to come together and get angry, there have been riots throughout the ‘vieux continent’ during the last couple years... Many. And at the anti-G8 protests this past week, riots were the topic of conversation on quite a few people’s lips. Maneuvering nationality, the various communities, collectives, federations and groups of anarchists and autonomists who gathered and lived together in Riddelich-the ‘radical’ camp a couple kilometers away from where the oligarchs of the G8 were meeting- and who presented their experiences and thoughts on the subject.
